Covestro produces, among other things, precursors for polyurethane foams and the high-performance plastic polycarbonate. We operate a global production network and produce in the EMLA, NA, and APAC regions, in particular for customers within the respective region. We always keep an eye on optimizing the technology used in the plants and processes while focusing on safety, efficiency, and quality in production. With our sustainable technologies and processes, we want to achieve net-zero GHG emissions in our own production (Scope 1 emissions) by the year 2035.

In addition to optimizing existing production processes, Covestro focuses on developing new process technologies, implementing leading technologies in the process design for new production facilities, and taking the production processes of newly developed products to industrial scale.

One example is the comprehensive modernization of our TDI plant in Dormagen (Germany). This investment will boost the long-term competitiveness of the site and contribute considerably to attaining our climate targets by significantly reducing energy consumption and CO₂ emissions. With innovative technologies and consistent process optimization, we thus set benchmarks for responsible and sustainable production – for the benefit of our customers, our partners along the value chain, and the entire industry in Europe.

At our site in Map Ta Phut in Thailand, we have, moreover, successfully expanded the production of polycarbonate specialty films. The new production lines are equipped with state-of-the-art technology, enabling energy-efficient manufacture. The expansion enables us to meet the expected growth in demand for innovative specialty films – especially for medical engineering – in the APAC region.

In the Solutions & Specialties segment, we are also continuing to drive the expansion of our global production capacities for thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU). In Zhuhai (China), the first phase of the multistage expansion of what will in future be the largest TPU production facility was completed as planned in the year 2025. At the same time, a new Application Development Center is being constructed in Guangzhou (China), which is tailored specifically to the requirements of our customers in the Asia-Pacific region. Both investments underscore our strategic focus on innovation and customer proximity, while strengthening our position in a high-growth market.

With the takeover of Pontacol, Covestro expanded its films business in the reporting year by acquiring highly specialized flat and blown films. This strengthens the company’s global manufacturing network, improves the regional availability of adhesive films, and opens up additional value creation potential through complementary technologies, an expanded product portfolio, as well as new customer relationships.

We invest continuously in our global production network in order to maintain our production sites and their infrastructure, to optimize manufacturing processes, and to expand capacities in line with market developments. To do so, Covestro relies on advanced and environmentally friendly production processes and continuously optimizes the technologies it uses.
