One example: The modernized TDI plant (which produces a key component for polyurethane foams used in mattresses, car seats, and furniture) in Dormagen has consumed 80 percent less energy compared to previous processes since March 2025, achieving CO2 savings of 22,000 tons per year.
In 2025, Covestro set itself a new energy efficiency target: By 2030, the company aims to require 20 percent less energy to produce one ton of product compared to 2020. This corresponds to savings of around 550,000 tons of CO2 emissions – comparable to the annual carbon footprint of a small city.
To achieve this, Covestro is increasingly investing in the maintenance and modernization of its facilities. This way, the company facilitates safe, reliable and efficient production with innovative, sustainable technologies. In parallel, Covestro continues to work on increasing the share of renewable energy in production. Important milestone: Since 2025, four US sites of the company use exclusively renewable electricity.
Safety is and remains the foundation for everything Covestro does. With education initiatives and trainings, the company works towards its goal: zero incidents!
This production transformation delivers multiple benefits:
