Unplanned downtime costs manufacturing companies millions of dollars each year. Covestro reduces this risk through automated monitoring of critical plant components and process steps supported by machine learning. As soon as critical production parameters change, the system triggers an alert. Through this detailed plant monitoring, which is currently being rolled out globally across nine sites, Covestro achieved increased production and cost avoidance opportunities worth a double-digit millions of euros in 2025 alone.
Furthermore, insights from the autonomous production line in one of our operations in Dormagen, which has been running successfully since June 2024, are now being transferred globally to other production facilities. Corresponding pilot projects have been initiated at seven sites worldwide with additional potential in the double-digit millions of euros.
While AI enhances our production capabilities, its benefits extend throughout our entire organization. Our virtual assistant is evolving into an intelligent platform that supports approximately 3,000 employees daily, with many more using it regularly. The impact is particularly evident in customer service: AI automates routine inquiries and provides insights for complex customer problems – enabling efficient, solution-oriented customer service. Specialized AI assistants help generate growth with existing and new customers and create significant value for customer interactions.
Systematic competency building pays off: Around 100 employees are growing Covestro's decentralized expert network in the AI Academy. Professionals with deep domain expertise can now combine their knowledge with data science and AI capabilities. This creates a powerful union of forces for concrete impact, as evidenced by more than 180 AI initiatives.
This AI transformation not only improves our internal processes but also creates direct benefits for our customers:
